Working out of a shop in Newport, Rhode Island, Anthony Daniels (@wouldboat) and a small team of fellow carpenters are restoring “Santana,” a 55-foot (17-meter) schooner once owned by Humphrey Bogart. “I salvaged a bunch of the original mahogany planks with plans to build a guitar,” he says. It was the lure of the ocean and boat-making’s elegant marriage of art and craft that uprooted Anthony and his wife Meridith (@thewayfaringweaver) from their comfortable lives in New York City, where she worked on Wall Street and he was an environmental scientist. “Leaving New York brought us down from one high and living on the ocean gave us another,” says Anthony. Restoring a boat to its former glory is sometimes difficult to capture. “Large boats dripping with lines and symmetry can do little justice in a photograph,” Anthony explains. “Capturing the shot can be as fun and rewarding as some of the builds.” Photo by @wouldboat by instagram
