There is no one during my lifetime like Nelson Mandela who thought so deeply about the issues that mattered to him, then by example, lived his beliefs. To have survived with his dignity and mind intact after 27 of the best years of his life spent in the brutal conditions of Robben Island and other prisons is a tribute to an amazing man. I cannot imagine anyone else who, upon gaining his freedom, would not have sought revenge on his oppressors. Yet he forgave and sought unity. I am grateful to this man, who showed us what we are capable of, even if he set an impossibly high bar. I believe his reward was to have lived to see his dreams come true.
