The Israel Defence Forces claims it has killed "about 50" Hamas fighters after conducting raids in what it called the "military quarter" of Gaza City - near the Shifa hospital.
The hospital has been the subject of much debate - with Israel claiming Hamas was hoarding weapons underneath the building in order to maximise any potential civilian casualties - something the militant group denies.
